The three levers of a mobile phlebotomy price

The base visit fee. One trip, one draw, delivery to the lab. This is the number patients compare first, and the one your profile leads with.

A per-tube fee — if you want one. Optional, and visible only if you charge it: a provider who sets it to zero simply shows no per-tube line. Among providers who do charge one, the typical figure is around $10 per tube. It is a way to let a two-tube visit and a ten-tube visit price themselves instead of averaging both into your base fee.

Per-service prices. Specialty kit collections, pediatric draws, facility visits — work that costs you more time or more skill can carry its own price instead of stretching your base fee to cover the hardest case you ever take.

What your base fee has to absorb

Before comparing yourself to anyone’s number, list what yours has to pay for. The visit is never just the minutes with the needle:

• Drive time to the patient, and the second drive to the laboratory drop-off. In a spread-out metro that second leg is often the longer one.
• Supplies you buy yourself: tubes, needles, transport packaging.
• Professional liability insurance, certification renewals, and where it applies, your state license.
• The visits that fall through. A cancelled morning still cost you the window you reserved for it.

A fee that looks generous per visit and ignores those lines is how independents end up subsidizing their own patients.

Deciding where in the range you sit

Not advice — questions. The providers at different points of the published range tend to differ on exactly these:

• How far will you drive? A tight radius supports a leaner fee; a wide one has to charge for the windshield time.
• What do you take on? Routine draws only, or specialty work that fewer hands in your area can do?
• When are you available? Early-morning windows are the scarcest slots in this work — scarcity is priceable.
